Topic Sentence - The topic sentence of a classification paragraph should include both the target of your classification (e.g., people) and the principle of classification.
Categories - Include your categories in your topic sentence.
Classification Principle - Describe the your method or rationale of your classification.
Distinct Categories - Make sure that your categories are distinct.
Purpose - Include the overall purpose of the classification in your paragraph. What is the point?
Transition Importance - Transitional phrases or words that emphasize importance (e.g., clearly) are effective in classification paragraphs.
Transition Category - Transitional phrases that make categories distinct (e.g., one type . . . another type) are effective for use in classification paragraphs.
